A festményről
Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriël painted Ducks’ Nests around 1890–1900. The work is in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. Willow baskets balanced on poles provide nesting shelters for ducks, whose eggs people formerly collected to eat. Instead of the broad panoramas and windmills associated with other Gabriël paintings, this view concentrates on a small feature of the watery countryside. The artist places the viewpoint low on the embankment, making this close look at the nesting baskets an unusual way of presenting the familiar Dutch landscape.

These baskets made of willow branches and resting on sticks were intended to offer shelter to nesting ducks. In the past, their eggs were gathered for consumption. In contrast to his mills and panoramic views, Gabriël here ‘zooms in’ on a detail in nature. He thus presents an unusual perspective of the watery Dutch landscape from a low vantage point on the embankment.
