A festményről
Jacob de Wit painted Winter in 1740. The overdoor is in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. He made the seasonal allegory for Cornelis Hop’s house before Hop became a city burgomaster. Smooth passages of white and grey imitate the modelling of sculpted marble or stucco rather than full-colour painting. This grisaille technique allowed painted decoration to take on the appearance of relief. Such works became known in Dutch as witjes, a nickname playing on de Wit’s surname and its meaning, white. Summer and Autumn also belong to the associated display.

Jacob de Wit painted this overdoor, an allegory of Winter, for the house of Cornelis Hop, who later became burgomaster of Amsterdam. Summer and Autumn are also on view in this room. With smoothly executed scenes in white and grey paint (grisailles), De Wit emulated stucco or marble reliefs, thereby imitating sculpture. In Dutch these kinds of paintings were called ‘witjes’, a play on the artist’s surname, Wit (Dutch: ‘white’).
