A festményről
Anton Mauve painted The Vegetable Garden around 1885–1888. The canvas is in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum. A committed outdoor painter, Mauve began regularly depicting farm orchards and vegetable plots in 1884. His colours became brighter than the greyish palette he had preferred a few years earlier. Here numerous shades of green fill the garden. White linen and the woman's cap provide light accents that bring freshness and a stronger sense of depth to the scene. The painting is on view in room 1.18.
A múzeum szavaival
Mauve called himself a real ‘outdoors man’. From 1884 he regularly painted the vegetable and fruit gardens of farms. He used a bright palette instead of the greyish tones he had favoured a few years earlier. The vegetable garden here displays a wealth of green tonalities. The white accents of the linen and the woman’s cap lend depth and freshness to the image.

Settles in Laren in the Gooi
In the last two years of his life Mauve settles in the village of Laren, in the Gooi region around Hilversum. The group of painters who lived there, among them Jozef Israëls and Albert Neuhuys, is known as the Larense School, and the Gooi was dubbed “Mauve land” as far afield as the United States.
