Pendant ce temps, chez Allen Ginsberg

La vie entière
  1. 1962–1963

Wandering through India: Calcutta and Benares

With Peter Orlovsky he travelled extensively across India, living half a year at a time in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Benares (Varanasi). When the authorities were eager to expel him, his political connections, most notably Pupul Jayakar, helped him extend his stay.

  2. 1962–1963

Meetings with Tibetan teachers in India

During an early trip to India with Gary Snyder, whose chanting of the Prajnaparamita, in Ginsberg’s words, “blew my mind”, he met the Dalai Lama and the Karmapa at Rumtek Monastery and, in Kalimpong, Dudjom Rinpoche, who taught him not to cling to anything horrible or anything beautiful.

  3. 1965

    In Moscow: Voznesensky and Akhmadulina

He travelled to the USSR, where in Moscow he met the Sixties poets Andrei Voznesensky and Bella Akhmadulina.

  4. late April 1965

    King of May in Prague

In April, after Warsaw, he arrived in Prague, where at a youth street carnival he was elected “King of May” (Král Majáles).

  5. 7 May 1965

Arrest in Prague and expulsion from Czechoslovakia

A week after being named King of May, Ginsberg was arrested for alleged drug use and public drunkenness, and the StB confiscated writings it considered lewd and morally dangerous; he was deported from Czechoslovakia on 7 May 1965.

Carl Solomon in his Prince Street apartment several years after we were locked up together in residence on Sixth Floor ward, New York State Psychiatric Institute. He got shock treatments, introduced me to Jean Genet’s _Miracle of the Rose_ and Antonin Artaud’s _Van Gogh, The Man Suicided by Society_ translations, I stayed eight months, weekends off. Afterwards, working mid-town at his uncle’s Ace Books publications, he gave Kerouac small advance on first _On the Road_ sketches (scroll later rejected), saw Jaime DeAngulo’s classic _Indian Tales_ first hard-back through press, & edited William Burroughs’ _Junkie_ paperback first edition.
