Forêt tropicale avec singes est un tableau réalisé par le peintre français Henri Rousseau en 1910. Partie des Jungles pour lesquelles l'artiste est particulièrement reconnu, cette huile sur toile naïve représente des singes dans une jungle où l'on aperçoit également un serpent. Compliquée par l'utilisation que font deux primates d'outils humains, en particulier d'une canne à pêche, la peinture est aujourd'hui conservée à la National Gallery of Art, à Washington, aux États-Unis.

A studio in Montparnasse
In 1893 Rousseau moved to a studio in Montparnasse, where he lived and worked until his death in 1910.

Picasso’s banquet in Rousseau’s honour
Picasso came across a Rousseau painting being sold on the street as a canvas to be painted over, instantly recognised his genius and went to meet him; in 1908 he gave a half-serious, half-burlesque banquet for Rousseau in his Bateau-Lavoir studio, attended by Apollinaire, Gertrude Stein, Max Jacob, Marie Laurencin, Juan Gris and others.

In March 1910 Rousseau exhibited “The Dream,” his last painting, at the Salon des Indépendants.

Phlegmon in the leg
In March 1910, the month “The Dream” was shown, Rousseau developed a phlegmon in his leg.

Necker Hospital: gangrene and surgery
In August 1910 Rousseau was admitted to the Necker Hospital in Paris, where his son had died; gangrene was found in his leg. After an operation he died of a blood clot on 2 September.
