Portrait de l'artiste est un tableau réalisé par le peintre français Gustave Caillebotte vers 1892. Cette huile sur toile est un autoportrait dans lequel l'artiste se représente en buste, son profil gauche tourné vers le spectateur. Entrée dans les collections publiques en 1971, l'œuvre est affectée au musée d'Orsay, à Paris, depuis 1986.

In 1890 Caillebotte played a major role in helping Claude Monet organize a public subscription and persuade the French state to purchase Édouard Manet’s “Olympia” (1863).

A slowdown: he stops painting large canvases
His painting career slowed dramatically in the early 1890s, when he stopped working on large canvases; he turned increasingly to en plein air landscapes, especially river scenes, and to floral still lifes.

A will leaving 68 Impressionist paintings to the state
At the time of his death the Impressionists were still largely condemned by the art establishment, so Caillebotte bequeathed to the state a collection of 68 paintings by Pissarro, Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Degas, Cézanne and Manet, stipulating that it be displayed in the Luxembourg Palace and then in the Louvre rather than vanish into “attics” and provincial museums.

Dies in his garden of pulmonary congestion
Caillebotte died at the age of 45 of pulmonary congestion while working in his garden at Petit-Gennevilliers.
