Для произведений Фёдора Васильева, творчество которого из-за трагической краткости жизни укладывается всего в 5–6 лет, тем не менее, характерно большое разнообразие живописно-пластических решений. Этот «гениальный юноша», как называл его старший друг художник Иван Крамской, мог быть в своих картинах то академически суховатым, то лирически взволнованным. При этом он всегда умел выражать тончайшие состояния природы и души человека.
В картине «Рыбаки» поэтическая образность и элегичность соединяются с абсолютной верностью натуре. Топкие заболоченные берега Финского взморья и чуть заметные вдали очертания петербургских соборов изображены с почти топографической точностью. Холодноватые жемчужно-розовые краски передают зыбкую прозрачность света и тишину, словно разлитую в северной природе. Васильев в данной работе выступает как прекрасный колорист, сумевший малейшими нюансами цвета передать и промозглый воздух раннего утра, и чуть разгорающуюся зарю в молочной дымке тумана. Ярко-рыжие прибрежные насыпи с пожухлой травой контрастируют с парящими белоснежными облаками, растворяющимися в голубом небе. Для Васильева «жизнь неба» была особым камертоном, определяющим созвучие мира природы и души человека.

Study at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts
Vasilyev quit his clerical job and enrolled at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in St. Petersburg, combining evening classes with work for P. K. Sokolov, a restorer at the Academy of Arts.

First Prize for "The Return of the Herd"
Vasilyev spent the summer months of 1868 with Shishkin in the village of Konstantinovka near St. Petersburg; The Return of the Herd, painted there, won first prize for landscape painting at the competitive exhibition of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, and the Academy of Arts awarded him the title of free artist.

A Cold and Tuberculosis
While working on The Thaw in the winter of 1870, Vasilyev caught a severe cold; he was found to have tuberculosis, which determined the course of the rest of his life.

Journey down the Volga with Repin
Together with I. Repin and E. Makarov, Vasilyev sailed down the Volga from Tver to Saratov, setting up working quarters opposite the Zhiguli Hills. The Volga impressions and drawings served as the basis for a number of paintings.

Move to Yalta
Because of his tuberculosis, Vasilyev left St. Petersburg for good and, with funds from the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, went to Crimea. He spent the last two years of his life in Yalta, working hard and intensely, at times at the expense of his treatment.

"The Thaw" at the London International Exhibition
An author's replica of The Thaw, commissioned by the future Emperor Alexander III, was shown at the 1872 International Exhibition in London and awarded a medal.
