Bij de slag van Culloden in 1746 werd de opstand van de Jacobieten in Schotland door de Engelsen neergeslagen. Na deze overwinning portretteerde Hogarth de gevangen genomen 70-jarige Schotse opstandeling Lovat in een herberg te St. Albans, waar de kunstenaar speciaal voor deze gelegenheid naartoe was gereisd. De lord wordt beschreven als een bedrieger en profiteur. Wachtend op zijn proces zou hij hier op zijn vingers aftellen welk voordeel hij de laatste dagen van zijn leven nog kon behalen.
