Anverso: Músicos Vista del foso de la orquesta de un teatro, con un palco con espectadores al fondo. En la zona de los músicos, vemos de espaldas, en último plano, a un pianista, con la partitura desplegada frente a él. En primer plano, un violonchelista visto de perfil, barbado y con el instrumento prácticamente sólo insinuado por el mástil. A la izquierda, otro instrumentista, o el director, visto casi de frente pero con la cabeza sólo dibujada con un óvalo. Frente a él, un atril. Reverso: Rasguños Podría identificarse con un mapa en el que se vería Francia en la zona superior y la bota de Italia. Dentro de la silueta, varios puntos marcados con cruces, que podrían indicar el itinerario de un viaje.

Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons
The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
