À propos du tableau

The subject comes from the Book of Isaiah in the Old Testament: ‘I will greatly rejoice in the Lord…; for he hath clothed me with a robe of righteousness’. In 1847 a critic found the painting ‘beautiful and impressive in its touching simplicity’, but ‘extremely stiff and formal’.
