В творчестве Валентина Серова детские портреты занимают особое место. Созданные на заказ или по своему желанию, они пронизаны душевной теплотой, лиризмом, тонким пониманием мира детства. Многие из его персонажей, как Лёля Дервиз, изображены на фоне пейзажа, выполняющего важную роль в раскрытии образа. Свежесть летнего дня, которую мастер виртуозно передал с помощью импрессионистических приемов в палитре светлых солнечных тонов, созвучна нежности и чистоте ее возраста. Как и в других серовских портретах, таких как «Мика Морозов» (1902), «Девочки Боткины» (1900), в работе по-прежнему акцентом становится лицо ребенка. Пойманный художником взгляд юной модели — одновременно удивленный и сдержанный, наряду с застывшей и несколько напряженной позой позволяет судить о серьезности ее характера.

С Еленой Владимировной (Лёлей) Дервиз (1889-1975), ставшей во взрослой жизни прекрасной пианисткой, Серов находился в родстве. Лёля была младшей дочерью Надежды Дервиз, кузины художника. По воспоминаниям младшей двоюродной сестры художника — Нины Симонович-Ефимовой, “...прелестный портрет очень живописной девочки с серыми глазками в розовом - горошком – платье” - создавался в Домотканове на той же аллее, что и картина "Девушка, освещенная солнцем" (1888), но в другом ее конце.

Усадьбу Домотканово, расположенную в Тверской губернии, Владимир Дервиз приобрел в 1886 году. Серов приезжал сюда всякий раз, освободившись от заказных работ. В кругу близких людей он любил отдохнуть и поработать с этюдником в руках на природе. В тенистом усадебном парке с восемью прудами и тихими липовыми аллеями художник создал свои первые импрессионистические шедевры, в том числе и этот лирический детский портрет.

    On Repin’s initiative Serov first exhibited with the Peredvizhniki (their 18th exhibition), showing a portrait of his father, and received a flattering notice from the critic Vladimir Stasov.

    Wins the competition for “Alexander III and His Family”

    The nobility of Kharkov, wishing to commemorate the miraculous escape of the imperial family in the 1888 train crash at Borki station, announced a competition for a painting of Alexander III and his family. Serov and Korovin won it with a sketch; the preliminary portraits for the canvas had to be painted from photographs.

    Elected a member of the Peredvizhniki

    In 1894 Serov was elected a member of the Peredvizhniki, to which he belonged until 1900; his portrait of S. A. Tolstaya and the landscape “In the Crimea” were shown at their 22nd exhibition.

    Through the Russian North with Korovin

    Having finished and presented “Alexander III and His Family”, Serov spent two months, until the end of September 1894, travelling through the Russian North with Konstantin Korovin and painted a great many studies.
