Move to Paris
After studying in Madrid, Rivera settled in Paris, where he lived and worked from 1909 to 1920; he was closely acquainted with the Parisian artistic elite, including Pablo Picasso and Alfonso Reyes.
1921
Return to Mexico for the state mural programme
After José Vasconcelos became Minister of Education, Rivera returned home to join the government-sponsored mural programme he had planned; it also involved José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo and the Frenchman Jean Charlot.

Expelled from the Party and dismissed as director of the Academy
Having watched Stalinisation in the USSR, Rivera came to hold Trotskyist views; in 1929 he was expelled from the Mexican Communist Party and removed as director of the San Carlos Academy.

Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art
In November 1931 the Museum of Modern Art in New York mounted a retrospective of Rivera's work, which Frida Kahlo attended with him; it took place shortly before he began the Detroit murals.
