After a long illness his wife Marthe died; Denis painted a chapel in her memory.

Together with George Desvallières he founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacré (Workshops of Sacred Art), which produced art for churches, especially those ravaged by the recent war.

He married Élisabeth Graterolle, who had posed for one of the figures of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées dome; the marriage produced two children — Jean-Baptiste (1923) and Pauline (1925).
