Pendant ce temps, chez Joan Miró
La vie entière1911
His first depression, and the end of a business career
At eighteen Miró suffered his first depression: he fell seriously ill and spent three months in bed. After the breakdown he abandoned the business world for art for good. Painting helped him cope with depression: without it, he said, he was beset by “black ideas”.
1917–1918
His first solo show at the Galeries Dalmau
Miró's first solo show was held at the Galeries Dalmau in Barcelona; his work was ridiculed and defaced.
1920
Moves to Paris
Inspired by Fauve and Cubist exhibitions, Miró was drawn to the artistic community gathering in Montparnasse and moved to Paris, though he continued to spend his summers in Catalonia.
1920
Meets Picasso
In Paris Miró met Picasso and other artists.
1924
Joins the Surrealist circle
Miró joined the Surrealist circle, whose dream-like automatism suited his symbolic and poetic art, but chose not to become an official member so as to experiment freely; Breton called him “the most Surrealist of us all”.
