Dans la vie de Pieter Bruegel the Elder
La vie entière1551–1563 · Lieu de travail
Antwerp
1555–1563
Designer of prints for Cock’s publishing house
From 1555 to 1563 he lived in Antwerp, the publishing centre of northern Europe, working mainly as designer of more than forty prints for Cock; with one exception he did not work the plates himself but supplied a drawing for Cock’s specialists to follow.
1559
Changes the spelling of his name: Bruegel without the “h”
From 1559 he signed his paintings Bruegel, dropping the “h” (his relatives kept Brueghel or Breughel) and changing from Gothic blackletter to Roman capitals; in the humanist circles of Antwerp this can be read as an attempt to Latinise the name.
