In 1956 Nicholson wins the first Guggenheim International painting prize.

International painting prize at the São Paulo Biennial
In 1957 Nicholson wins the international prize for painting at the São Paulo Art Biennial.

Moves to Switzerland
In 1958, after 19 years in St Ives, Nicholson moves to Castagnola in Switzerland (other accounts say to Lake Maggiore), where he lives and works.
