Algernon Newton was known for his eerily deserted, bleak cityscapes; this view of a deserted street in Hadleigh - in reality a bustling Suffolk market town - is typical of his work. Two years after Newton made this drawing, Hadleigh achieved a measure of notoriety as the site of Raydon airfield, one of 32 airfields in Suffolk used by American and British fighter squadrons during the war.
