Joe Tilson (born 1928) was linked in the years around 1960 with a group of young artists at the Royal College of Art, London, who formed an informal 'movement' soon to be called Pop Art. These included Ron Kitaj, Allen Jones, David Hockney and Tom Phillips. Tilson's works are usually brightly coloured, in the manner of the popular, mass-market images that inspired these young artists. His subject-matter is treated in a direct and confrontational way. He sometimes uses words or number in his pictures. The sheet in this watercolour is graph paper. The areas are numbered from 1 to 21 at the top and on either side, but, within the grid, the lines and circles do not behave themselves: they overlap or are displaced or severed by one another.
