Steen opened the tavern “De Vrede” (“Peace”); his debts mounted again, the art market was declining, and according to Houbraken he often spent his time drinking.

Second marriage: Maria van Egmont
On 22 April 1673 Steen married Maria van Egmont, who had previously been married and had two children; in 1674 she bore him another son.
