Vista del interior de lo que parece un bar o taberna, con varios hombres sentados. En primer plano, a la derecha, las piernas de una figura masculina de pie, inclinada hacia delante. Tras él, hacia el centro de la hoja, figura masculina sentada en una silla, de espaldas a nosotros. Lleva a la cabeza un sombrero flexible, y está sentado a una mesa en cuyo lado opuesto se sienta otro hombre que queda de frente a nosotros pero al que no distinguimos bien la cara por tenerla agachada. Éste caballero también se cubre con sombrero. Al fondo, hacia la izquierda, otros dos hombres sentados, y a la derecha, una última figura de pie, muy esbozada.

    Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.

    Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons

    The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

    “A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid

    Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
