Watercolour sketch created for publication in a magazine/newspaper, probably The Penny Illustrated Paper. The illustration shows a series of scenes from a production of The White Heatherat the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1897. Hand painted captions identify the performer and scene associated with each image, which includes a dramatic 'underwater' scene, and the painting has been signed by the artist, T.Robinson, in the bottom left hand corner.
Thomas Robinson (father of the cartoonist and illustrator, W.Heath Robison (1872-1944) was the Chief Artist of the Penny Illustrated Paper.
This item is one of several drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
