Pendant ce temps, chez Frederic, Lord Leighton

La vie entière
  1. summer 1847

    Draws Arthur Schopenhauer from life

In the summer of 1847 in Frankfurt the young Leighton met the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and drew his portrait in graphite and gouache, the only known full-length study of Schopenhauer done from life.

  2. 1848

    Leaves revolutionary Frankfurt for Paris

Two years after taking up his studies in Frankfurt, Leighton left the city because of the revolutionary unrest and moved to Paris.

  3. 1850

Returns to Frankfurt and completes his studies

In 1850 Leighton and his family were back in Frankfurt, where he completed his studies and began his first large-scale pictures, on scenes from the life of the 13th-century Italian painter Cimabue. His teachers on the Continent were Eduard von Steinle and then Giovanni Costa.
