Das Licht! Die Farben! Impressionistische Gemälde scheinen von innen heraus zu leuchten. Vielfach abgetönt stehen Rosa, Blau und Grün nebeneinander. Aus der Nähe besehen sind zunächst nur farbige Flecken zu erkennen. Erst die richtige Distanz bringt den Eindruck von Kochhaube und Mantel, beleuchteten Partien und Schatten hervor. Wie alle Impressionisten schenkt Monet nicht der fein säuberlichen Abbildung realer Gegenstände seine Aufmerksamkeit, sondern der flüchtigen Wahrnehmung optischer Phänomene. Dargestellt ist Paul Antoine Graff. Er war ein viel gelobter Koch und Besitzer eines kleinen Hotels im nordfranzösischen Pourville, wo sich Monet 1882 mehrere Wochen lang aufgehalten hatte.

    Instead of the planned three weeks, Monet spent almost three months in the Ligurian town of Bordighera and painted 38 pictures. He called the town a magical, fairy-tale land; on the way back he stopped in Menton.
