About the painting
In January 1899, Karin Larsson had a severe case of pneumonia. Once she had pulled through the worst crisis, her relieved husband painted a picture of the convalescent. Here she is, lying in bed in their home on Stora Glasbruks¬gatan in Stockholm. This subject had become an established tradition – in the 1800s, scenes with women lying ill in bed became popular. It also reflects a tendency in art and literature at the time, to portray women as weak and fragile rather than strong and active.
