Van Gogh praises Meissonier in a letter to his brother
Unlike the Impressionists, Vincent van Gogh thought far better of Meissonier: in a letter to his brother Theo he writes that Meissonier’s brushwork has something thoroughly French that the Dutch could never achieve, and that he is modern.
