About the painting
Cherry Cottrell (1909-1996) has a brief but notable career in the 1930s and 1940s, when she was amongst the most promising actresses of her day. She appeared frequently at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, and at the Westminster Theatre, and acted opposite Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic, where she played Ophelia to his Hamlet.
The portrait may show Cherry Cottrell in character as Kate Hardcastle in Goldsmith's play She Stoops to Conquer, a role she played at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1930.
