Dans la vie de Rosa Bonheur

La vie entière
  1. 1856–1867

Absent from the Salon: everything sold in advance

All her works were sold in advance, so Bonheur did not exhibit at the Salon. Théophile Gautier wrote that with her “there is no need to be gallant”: she took art seriously and could be judged on a par with men.

  2. 1864

A surprise visit from Empress Eugénie

The Empress invited Bonheur to lunch with Napoleon III (the visit is recorded in a wood engraving after Auguste Victor Deroy), and on 10 June 1865 she returned to present her in person with the cross of the Legion of Honour — the first woman artist so honoured.

  3. 1865 · Distinction

    Order of Saint Charles

  4. 8 juin 1865 · Distinction

Knight of the Legion of Honour
