Отец Менгса, придворный саксонский живописец, предопределил путь будущего художника еще при рождении, дав ему два имени — Антон и Рафаэль, в честь двух мастеров XVI века — Антонио Корреджо и Рафаэля Санти. Эти два художника оставались его идеалом всю жизнь. В юности Менгс переехал в Рим, где неустанно и педантично штудировал классиков. Уже первый автопортрет Менгса был уподоблен скульптурному портрету Рафаэля. В последнем, один из вариантов которого хранится в Эрмитаже, он ориентировался на рафаэлевский «Автопортрет с другом», заимствовав именно позу «друга». Первоначальная версия полотна создавалась Менгсом специально для Галереи автопортретов Уффици. Художник собственноручно повесил это свое изображение в галерее под знаменитым юношеским автопортретом Рафаэля, тем самым ясно обозначив как преемственность, так и субординацию по отношению к боготворимому им предшественнику.

A second stay in Naples: royal portraits
From 1772 to 1773 Mengs was again in Naples, once more working on portraits of members of the royal family.

A self-portrait in the Uffizi — beneath Raphael's own
In 1773 Mengs's self-portrait in the Uffizi gallery was hung in a place of honour — beneath the self-portrait of Raphael.

Elected prince of the Roman Academy of St Luke
In 1774 Mengs was elected prince (president) of the Roman Academy of St Luke.

Meeting the young Goya
In Spain Mengs met the young Francisco Goya and probably recognised his talent and helped him obtain a post as court painter and cartoonist at the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara.

Back in Spain: cartoons for the Santa Barbara tapestry works
In 1774 Mengs came to Spain once more; he himself produced cartoons for the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara.
1777
Returns to Rome because of ill health
Because of illness — he tolerated the cold Madrid winters badly — Mengs returned to Rome in 1777.
