Мари Лорансен, подруга Аполлинера, была связана с кубистами на начальной стадии их деятельности. Иногда, без особых на то оснований, ее называли музой этих художников. Позаимствовав как отдельные приемы раннего кубизма, так и примитивистские приемы Анри Руссо, она отнюдь не помышляла соперничать с Пикассо, Браком и Леже в создании новых пластических конструкций. Творчество художницы целиком фокусировалось на собственном образе, сделавшись суммой бесконечных более или менее идеализированных вариаций ее автопортрета. Живопись Мари Лорансен не лишена тонкого чувства цвета и изящества, сопряженных с ненавязчивым эротизмом. В связи с «Артемидой» и другими картинами 1908 года Аполлинер, подчеркивая их «совершенно французскую грацию», писал: «Возможно, величайшая ошибка большинства художниц заключается в том, что они хотят превзойти своих коллег.

Действуя подобным образом, они теряют свой женский вкус и грациозность. Случай м-ль Лорансен совершенно другой. Она осознает глубокие различия, существующие между мужчинами и женщинами: изначальную разницу и разницу в идеалах. Личность мадемуазель Лорансен трепещет радостью.     In 1907 Picasso introduces her to the poet Guillaume Apollinaire; their passionate affair lasts until 1912, he dedicates poems to her, and she is often identified as his muse.

    Among the Cubists of the Section d'Or

    She belongs to Picasso's circle and to the Cubists associated with the Section d'Or (Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes, Robert Delaunay, Henri Le Fauconnier, Francis Picabia), exhibiting with them at the Paris salons and at the Galeries Dalmau, at the first Cubist exhibition in Spain.
