Een engel voorspelt aan Maria, die met gevouwen handen voor haar bed naast een lezenaar zit, de geboorte van Christus. Boven de engel God en de Heilige Geest in de gedaante van een duif. Onder de voorstelling een onderschrift in Latijn. Deze prent is onderdeel van een reeks prenten rond het leven van Maria, bestaande uit een titelprent en dertien verhalende voorstellingen.

    In the year the large series of the “Miseries of War” is published, Lorraine is invaded by the French during the Thirty Years’ War; Callot’s etchings of pillaging, executions and the lot of crippled beggars are counted among the most powerful artistic statements of the inhumanity of war and will later inspire Goya.
