About the sculpture

This is a figure of the mourning Virgin in carved walnut; it comes from a Crucifixion group, and was perhaps made in Netherlands or North Germany in the third quarter of the 15th century. The Virgin stands on a modern moulded base looking down to her left with her hands clasped. This figure is worm-eaten and cracked and there are slight traces of colour.
