Sobre el cuadro

On a table, next to some fruit, is a statuette. But the painting does not give many clues as to the surrounding room – a fireplace is vaguely suggested in the background, along with a window to the left. It is executed with light brush strokes and thin oil paint – in a style that resembles watercolour. In several places the pale primed canvas is visible through the paint. The statuette on the table is a plaster replica of a 17th century statue. The replica belonged to the artist and appears in several of his drawings and paintings.

    Onset of Diabetes

Cézanne developed diabetes; the illness further complicated his relations with those around him.

  3. 1895

    First Solo Exhibition at Vollard's

Ambroise Vollard opened Cézanne's first solo exhibition at his Paris gallery, showing 50 of the roughly 150 works submitted. The exhibition brought his art to a wide public; prices for his works rose a hundredfold.

    Death of His Mother

The artist's mother, Anne-Élisabeth-Honorine Aubert, died.

  5. 1899

Sale of the Jas de Bouffan

At his sister's insistence he sold the deserted Jas de Bouffan estate and moved to a small town apartment at 23 rue Boulegon in Aix; a planned purchase of the Château Noir fell through. He hired a housekeeper, Madame Brémond, who cared for him until his death.

  6. 1901–1903

The Studio on the Chemin des Lauves

In 1901 he bought a plot of land north of Aix, in 1902 built a studio there to his own specifications (now the Atelier de Cézanne), and moved in in 1903; a long narrow slot was cut into the wall to admit natural light for the large "Bathers."
