В портрете девочки проявляется характерная для суриковских детских портретов особенность – они почти всегда серьезны. Художник редко изображал детей улыбающимися, избегал какой-либо идеализации и слащавости. Frescoes for Christ the Saviour and the move to Moscow
Having received a commission for four frescoes on the Ecumenical Councils for the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Surikov starts work in St Petersburg and in 1877 moves to Moscow. He has no home of his own there, living in rented apartments and hotels, and often spends the summer in Krasnoyarsk.

His wedding to Elizaveta Share
On 25 January 1878 Surikov marries Elizaveta Augustovna Share; the wedding takes place in the Vladimir Church in St Petersburg, after which the newlyweds leave for Moscow. The bride’s mother, Maria Alexandrovna Share, was a relative of the Decembrist Pyotr Svistunov.

The birth of his daughter Elena
In 1880 Surikov and Elizaveta Share have a second daughter, Elena (1880–1963), later a professor of history and a great lover of the theatre.

He joins the Peredvizhniki
In 1881, the year “The Morning of the Streltsy Execution” is completed, Surikov becomes a member of the Peredvizhniki, the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions; he will remain in it until 1907.
