Мастер городского пейзажа с натуры - ведуты - Гварди нередко обращался и к жанру "каприччи" - свободным фантазиям и импровизациям. "Пейзаж" из эрмитажного собрания был исполнен Гварди в последние годы жизни, в тот период, когда он создал самые выдающиеся свои произведения. Полотна такого большого размера в его наследии единичны. Серебристо-коричневый колорит картины, оживленный искрящимися мазками белил, богатство цвета, динамичность рисунка создают тревожное и в то же время романтическое настроение. Небо, холмы, залив, изогнутые деревья - все проникнуто дыханием жизни.
