Mourning Virgin

This Virgin is closely comparable to a number of complete 'Vesperbilder' (the German version of the Pietà) of fourteenth century date produced in the Rhineland, although the exact date of many of these is uncertain. This present example most probably occupies an intermediary stage of development of the Rhenish 'Vesperbilder', and should be dated around 1310-1330.

The Virgin must have once held the figure of the Dead Christ on her knees.
