The Montauban war memorial: scandal and Rodin’s intervention
In 1895 Bourdelle received his first official commission, a memorial for his native Montauban to the dead of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. His design, unlike traditional monuments, caused a scandal and crushing criticism from academic artists; it was finally accepted in 1897 thanks to Rodin’s intervention on his behalf.
