About the painting
Anciana leyendo, también conocida como Anciana leyendo un leccionario, es una pintura al óleo del pintor holandés Gerrit Dou, realizada c. 1631–1632. En el pasado la obra fue atribuida a Rembrandt y se la tituló La madre de Rembrandt, pero esta atribución ha sido rechazada hace tiempo. El retrato forma parte de la colección del Rijksmuseum, de Ámsterdam, desde noviembre de 1912.
In the museum's words
The book is rendered in such detail that it is easy to see what the woman is reading: the beginning of chapter 19 of the Gospel of Luke. The passage states that those who wish to do good must give away half of all they own to the poor. The old woman’s expensive clothing contrasts sharply with this message: she is still attached to worldly possessions.
