Sobre la obra
Niño sentado en el muelle, posiblemente su hijo Joaquín, de perfil, con los pies colgando en el vacío, camisa, y pantalón matizados con pastel siena y clarión, siendo el centro de la composición del dibujo. La figura se recorta sobre el mar. Al fondo, sobre la cabeza del niño en el mar, flota una barca velera, con mástil. El mar está configurado a base de ráfagas de carbón, en clarión y pastel siena alternantes, tratando de reflejar efectos lumínicos. Dibujos como Joaquín en Jávea, transmiten cierto intimismo, dejándonos intuir el goce compartido con su mujer y sus tres hijos en ese entorno que tantas satisfacciones le deparaba como pintor.

Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
