Vista del ángulo del interior de un edificio. A la izquierda, un paramento en perspectiva en el que vemos, en primer plano, una chimenea, con el hueco para el fuego enmarcado por volutas. El cuerpo superior, rectangular, parece que tiene algún tipo de decoración, y sobre él un tercer cuerpo, decorado en su centro con un cuadro del que se ha representado el marco. Avanzando en la perspectiva, tres hornacinas sobre zócalo, todas ellas de arco de medio punto y parece que con bóveda. Al fondo, el paramento del frente, del que se distingue el mismo zócalo y dos formas semicirculares, y seguidamente, parte de una escalera. La zona superior, correspondiente al techo, se ha rayado ligeramente.

Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons
The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.

Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
