When Philip of Burgundy becomes Bishop of Utrecht and settles in Duurstede Castle, Gossaert follows him and helps to decorate the new palace.

Dürer travels to Middelburg to see Gossaert's altarpiece
Albrecht Dürer comes expressly to Middelburg to see the altarpiece of the Descent from the Cross, a replica that Gossaert made at the order of Philip of Burgundy after the celebrated picture of Tongerlo Abbey. Dürer admired the work.

Returns to Middelburg in the service of Adolf of Burgundy
After Philip's death he returns to Middelburg, where he had already lived in 1509–1517, and takes service as court painter with Philip's brother Adolf of Burgundy, lord of Veere.
