Pen and ink illustration with highlights in watercolour, created for publication in an illustrated newspaper or magazine, probably The Illustrated London News.It shows a series of scenes from a production of 'The New Lyric Burlesque', Carmen up to Data, at The Gaiety Theatre in 1890. The nine individual scenes are arranged in a grid and each one is numbered. Handwritten annotation in ink at the base of the sketch indicates the events taking place in each image.
The illustration is not signed or dated, so the artist remains anonymous, but annotation on the rear indicates that it was drawn in 1890.
The burlesque Carmen up to Data, opened at The Gaiety Theatre in 1890. It starred Florence St John (1855-1912) in the title role and Letty Lind (1861-1923) as Mercedes.
This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
