Rubens becomes his “secretary” with Borromeo
From October 1610 Rubens acted as his friend's intermediary with Cardinal Borromeo: by 1625 he had written some 25 letters to the cardinal on Brueghel's behalf, and Brueghel jokingly called him 'mio secretario Rubens', 'my secretary Rubens'.

A diplomatic mission to Holland with Rubens
Brueghel accompanied Rubens and Hendrick van Balen the Elder on a diplomatic mission to the Dutch Republic; in Haarlem they met Hendrick Goltzius and other local artists. He may also have met Esaias van de Velde and Willem Buytewech there, both of whom knew his river views.
