Sobre la obra
En primer plano, en el centro, figura masculina de espaldas. Está realizada con trazos breves y esquemáticos, de forma que casi sólo se puede identificar por el sombrero que lleva sobre la cabeza. Frente a él, un caballo o burro también esquemático. La parte de la cara del hombre está rayada, o bien tachada por el artista o indicando algún elemento que no identificamos. Parte del cuerpo del animal también está rayado. Al fondo, breves líneas verticales pueden indicar paisaje, y a la derecha, hay rasguños (¿figura masculina?) realizados con lápiz en lugar de carboncillo. En la zona inferior también hay breves líneas verticales y una inscripción (¿zancos? ¿juncos?).

Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition
“Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”
The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
