    One of the founders of Dadaism in Zürich

    In 1915 in Zürich Arp became one of the founders of Dadaism; he illustrated books by Tristan Tzara, Benjamin Péret and Richard Huelsenbeck.

    Meets Sophie Taeuber at an exhibition

    At an exhibition in 1915 Arp first met the Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber, who became his collaborator and a significant influence on his style and working method.

    The Cabaret Voltaire becomes the centre of Zürich Dada

    In 1916 Hugo Ball opened the Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich, which became the centre of Dada activity for a group that included Arp, Marcel Janco, Tristan Tzara and others.

    The Cologne Dada group

    In 1920 Arp, working under the name Hans, set up the Cologne Dada group together with Max Ernst and the social activist Alfred Grünwald.

  5. 1925

    The first Surrealist exhibition at the Galerie Pierre

    In 1925 Arp’s work appeared in the first exhibition of the Surrealist group at the Galerie Pierre in Paris.

  6. 1943

    The death of Sophie Taeuber-Arp in Zürich

    In 1943 Sophie Taeuber-Arp died in Zürich, where the couple had moved to escape the occupation of France, of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
