In the museum's own words — in Dutch

Het zelfportret is het eerste van een opermerkelijke reeks van 18 levensgrote koppen met verschillende uitdrukkingen en in verschillende standen. In tegenstelling tot dit zelfportret zijn de meeste van deze gefantaseerde karakterkoppen. De schilder en graveur Frye werkte blijkens het onderschrift in Hatton House te Londen. Onderaan zet hij 'ipse '= zelf.
