In the life of Max Klinger

The whole life
  1. 1889

Invited to exhibit with Les XX

The members of Les XX (The Twenty) invite Klinger to exhibit his work in their annual winter exhibition in Brussels.

  2. 1889–1893

    Years in Rome

He settles in Rome and studies the Italian masters: 15th-century artists and works from antiquity are a revelation to him, and he intensifies his studies of anatomy, the nude and the representation of mass and volume — a very productive time. Other accounts say he arrived in Rome already in 1888.

  3. 1891

    Treatise “Painting and Drawing”

His polemical treatise “Painting and Drawing” (Malerei und Zeichnung), begun in Paris, is published: Klinger asserts a new role for prints and the graphic arts, distinct from painting and best suited to stylistic and conceptual experimentation. The book is a success and appears in Russian in 1908.

  4. 1891

Elected a full member of the Munich Academy

He stays in Munich, where he is elected a full member of the Academy of Fine Arts; he then travels to Italy again.

  5. 1892

A founder of the group “XI”

He becomes one of the founders of the group “XI”, made up of eleven artists, which opposes the Association of Berlin Artists.

  6. 1896

Brahms dedicates the “Four Serious Songs” to Klinger

Johannes Brahms dedicates his “Four Serious Songs” (Opus 121) to Klinger a year before the composer’s death; besides Brahms, Klinger, an accomplished pianist, counts the composer Max Reger among his friends.
