In the life of Joseph Mallord William Turner
The whole life1790
First exhibition at the Academy
A year after he entered, his watercolour “A View of the Archbishop’s Palace, Lambeth” was shown at the Academy’s annual exhibition; afterwards he exhibited there constantly.
1791
Begins his annual sketching tours
From 1791 he established an annual routine that he followed until his sixties: he stayed in London for the Royal Academy’s summer exhibition and travelled in the following months, sketching avidly; he filled nearly 300 sketchbooks, most of them on these travels, and used them as reference for his watercolours, prints and oil paintings even years later.
1791
Scenery painter at the Pantheon Opera
From 1791 he worked as a scenery painter at the Pantheon Opera on Oxford Street and earned extra money by giving lessons.
1796
Oil debut: “Fishermen at Sea”
At 21 he exhibited at the Academy the dramatic moonlit seascape “Fishermen at Sea”: it drew widespread acclaim from critics and established his reputation as a promising marine painter.
