About the painting

This painting is from a set of 100 depicting different trades and occupations in Canton. It shows a woman spooling silk. She draws and guides the thread coming from the skein frame with her left hand to check whether there are any knots or damage to the thread. With her right hand she rotates the hand-reel in a clockwise direction. The result is a thread with a slight twist. Artists made such paintings for Europeans eager to find out more about China and her people.
