Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.
Potter loved to sketch the British landscape, especially the Lake District. She purchased Hill Top farm and farmhouse in 1905 and in 1913 moved permanently to the area from London after marrying the Hawkshead solicitor, William Heelis. Potter enjoyed sketching the countryside at all different times of year and this quick sketch emanates an impression of Spring-time's influence on the land. The small watercolour drawing has been vignetted in a way that implies it was created for a book. However, it does not feature in any of Potter's works.
