Происхождение иконы пока не определено, но очевидно, что это произведение принадлежит кисти московского мастера, выросшего на традициях школы Оружейной палаты конца XVII века. С точки зрения состава и композиционного расположения изображенных персонажей мастер сохраняет классическую иконографическую схему: справа на высоких ступенях – первосвященник; к нему приближаются юная Мария и сопровождающие ее родители – Иоаким и Анна; слева – процессия иерусалимских дев, свидетелей события. Новаторством стало стремление мастера выстроить трехмерное пространство, в котором происходит сцена. Следуя западным образцам, скорее всего, гравюрам, он разворачивает на втором плане картину барочной сводчато-арочной архитектуры и дополняет ее роскошным занавесом с тяжелыми складками, частью балдахина над престолом за фигурой первосвященника. Все персонажи облачены в праздничные одежды с преобладающим в них ярко-алым цветом. Под кистью мастера они утрачивают статичность и наделяются жестами, ярко передающими их эмоции.
